At the Opening Keynote address Postmaster General, Pat Donahoe, was joined by Spider-Man & other USPS officers to announce that the USPS & Sony Pictures have joined forces to promote Priority Mail and the nationwide May 2 release of the motion picture, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” You may have seen some of the commercials now on TV.
Here are the other facts and figures you need to know for the future of the USPS:
- USPS announced free Address Correction Service for all residual pieces in Full-Service Mailings
- Every Door Direct Mail continues to grow & will soon hit 1 billion dollars
- USPS will roll out new mobile delivery devices to carriers – this is more than just a barcode scanner (right). This device can do pictures & time-stamp. So when a carrier passes mailboxes, it will show that pieces are delivered. It is also able to embed delivery instructions to carrier for packages (leave at back door)
- USPS wants to move to keep more mail out of sacks. Sacks are very costly to USPS
- 70% of flats are not processed on FSS equipment
- Expect a new type of postal facility - the HUB – between SCF & DDU. This to help with mail directly to DDUs
Costs of Undelivered As Addresses Mail (UAA)
- Cost to USPS in 2013 – $1.271 billion
- Forward Mail - $.231 per piece; Returned Mail - $.514; Waste - $.061
- Slight increase in 2013
- New program for secure destruction (guaranteed) – in pilot now to roll out by end of year
March 27 was to be the day the U.S. Postal Service's "load-leveling" plan to reduce man-hours took effect. Instead, it was the day that the Postal Regulatory Commission released its advisory opinion on the plan, which it found lacking. As a result, Post Office senior management will take time to digest the PRC's report before moving forward.
Currently, mailers that qualify for a Destination Sectional Center Facility (DSCF) discounted rate can expect Monday delivery of mail accepted by facilities on Thursday or Friday. Under the new load-leveling plan set to take effect on March 27, Standard Mail accepted on Friday will not be delivered until Tuesday, and mail accepted on Saturday will have a promised delivery day of Wednesday.
